As Pico Rivera resident Cynthia Carlos sat between two pitches in Rivera Park and watched her children, a son in soccer and daughter in practice to cheers, she thought about how good it was to ‘be back.

Their program, the Pico Rivera Dons and Donnas, came to a halt during COVID. “They are fighting to make sure we keep the program going, making rules and regulations and everything because of COVID,” Carlos said. “I love that they try to make things happen normally for the kids.”

Besides the pandemic break, 12-year-old Carlos has been playing football every year since the age of 7 and now his daughter has joined the Dons and Donnas family with joy.

Dons and Donnas, founded in the 1970s, is open to children aged 6 to 14 in Pico Rivera and other towns that do not have a franchise.

While families and coaches are happy to be back, they are still concerned about COVID.

“I just think, you know, we work really hard on our routines and put in a lot of effort and money and fundraising, and it’s just a fear that it’s for nothing if it’s closed. “, encourages Donnas coach Gina Salinas. noted.

Salinas also said it had been difficult to raise funds for the program. Even with the food nights, clothing drives, and other fundraisers they throw, that’s still not enough.

“It’s expensive, especially the cheers, with the uniforms, registration and competition fees,” Salinas said. “Parents have to do it themselves and right now, with parents in financial difficulty, it has been difficult. “

Cheerleading fees are around $ 300 and football fees range from $ 185 for flag football to $ 200 for tackle football, according to a post on the organization’s Facebook page.

Terry Palazuelos, longtime resident of Pico Rivera, who has her son in football, said the program “keeps them [children] out of trouble, keep them upright. I love to give back to the community and to the children.
