Pink Moon on the sky Friday

The moon will appear larger than the average because it will have three days of perigee, the point on its orbit closest to Earth, according to Space.com.

Although the name suggests that the moon will appear of a certain color, it is not true. Instead, the moon is named rose after the color of the wild land phlox, one of the early spring flowers. Native Americans named the moons in order to follow their harvest schedule.

Julie Ellerton captured this image in 2017 of the Pink Moon in Malibu, California.

The moon may look red or orange because of dust, mist, smoke or ashes in the atmosphere.

The next full moon will be the Moon of Flowers on May 18th.
