Pixel Now Playing gets UI overhaul, bookmarks, cloud search

The Pixel’s Now Playing feature is powered by Android System Intelligence (formerly known as Device Personal Services). An update for Pixel phones running Android 12 will introduce a redesign of the interface for Now Playing, as well as the ability to send unrecognized songs to the cloud.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” article, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an app that Google downloaded from the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see different lines of code in this clue about possible future functionality. Keep in mind that Google may or may not offer these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be flawed. However, we will try to allow those that are about to be completed to show you what they will look like in case they are dispatched. With that in mind, read on.

Now Playing works entirely on the device to recognize the music playing around you. It runs ambient in the background and displays the results at the bottom of your lock screen / AOD, along with a silent notification.

Android System Intelligence version S.6 on the Pixel 5 indicates an upcoming redesign currently playing that adds a three-tab interface. A “History” view will be joined by “Favorites” and “Summary” in the bottom bar.

We’re not sure exactly what this last tab does, but the ability to create favorites is useful for bookmarking and is a more elegant solution than scrolling the timeline or reverse timeline search.

Meanwhile, this UI overhaul also introduces ‘Now Playing Search’. If the song you are looking for is not in the local database, you will be presented with a search icon which can be added to the lock screen. As you type, you will send Google a “short digital audio fingerprint to identify what is being played.”

The company touts the use of “privacy-preserving scanning,” with this capability entirely optional and only activating when manually enabled. Now Playing search will work with and require the latest Google app, which already offers more advanced search.

How Now Playing Search Works

“Now Playing recognizes music using a song database stored on your phone. To protect your privacy, the automatic recognition process never sends audio or background conversations to Google. Now Playing Playing uses privacy-preserving analytics. N nIf you enable u201c Show search button on lock screen u201d, every time you tap to search, Google receives a short digital audio fingerprint to identify what is being read. “

The latest version of ASI is not yet widely available today, but it will likely coincide with the public launch of Android 12. Now Playing has not seen a major update for some time.

Thanks to JEB Decompiler, which benefits some APK Insight teardowns.
