The 1999 Charizard “Shadowless”, first edition, with a “PSA 10 Gem Mint” rating, sold on eBay, via PWCC Auctions, for $ 311,800 after a long bidding war. PWCC Auctions said there are only 122 cards with the PSA 10 Gem Mint distinction – which means it’s basically perfect – despite submitting 2,600 Charizard cards for a review.

In a YouTube video, a representative for PWCC Auctions called it “the most important and prolific card there is.”
“[The Charizard card] is the 52 Topps Mantle, the 86 Fleer Jordan, the 79 O-Pee-Chee Gretzky from the Pokemon hobby, ”said PWCC Auctions. “This is one of the most coveted collectible cards ever produced. Widely regarded as one of the holy grails of the Pokémon world, this Flame Pokémon is poised to show continued returns for years to come and become a top investment for any portfolio.
Pokémon as a franchise has had an incredible impact on culture around the world. As nostalgia for this era increases, Pokémon cards have continued to gain in value. It has become all the rage for people to buy unopened sets of Pokémon cards to be streamed on Twitch – a sort of game that feels like watching people open boxes of loot. Heck, some streamers even open streaming Pokémon cards just to destroy them.
Recently, McDonald’s celebrated Pokémon’s 25th anniversary by throwing Pokémon cards into Happy Meals – and nostalgic adults grabbed them.
