Waterbury police said the arrests stemmed from an extensive investigation that began last September "in response to an increase in heroin overdoses and heroin-related deaths" in the city .

The arrested people are intermediate-level drug traffickers involved primarily in the sale of heroin, said the Waterbury police. They added that the operation, lasting several months, dubbed "Operation Raw Deal", included "aggressive investigations on all identified heroin traffickers".

A total of 51 people have been arrested since Friday and the authorities are still looking for 10 more suspects, Waterbury Police spokesman David Silverio told CNN.

Thirteen teams of arrests launched a series of raids on Waterbury just after dawn on Friday. The charges related to arrest warrants include the sale of narcotics, possession in a school zone, conspiracy to sell narcotics and firearms violations, police said.

During the raids, police seized several guns, over $ 15,000 in cash, two cars, "several thousand" bags of heroin ready for sale and a half pound of heroin gross, police said.

"The goal of this vast investigation was to crack down on heroin trafficking in Waterbury," police said in a press release.

"As of May 4, there have been 24 deaths in Waterbury – this year alone – and 99 overdoses," Silverio told CNN's affiliate, WTIC. "We have a problem here in town."

Some 135 detectives, officers, officers and investigators from various police units in Waterbury participated in the arrests, as well as personnel from federal, local and local law enforcement agencies, including the Connecticut State Police, the Federal Drug Enforcement Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The Waterbury police said the heroin investigation "remains an open and active investigation".
