Police investigate deliberate spoilage of 500 doses of vaccine

GRAFTON, Wisconsin (AP) – Police and federal authorities are investigating after a Wisconsin health system said an employee admitted to deliberately wasting 500 doses of the coronavirus vaccine.

Aurora Medical Center first reported that the doses were wasted on Saturday, claiming they were accidentally left unrefrigerated overnight by an employee at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton. The health system said on Wednesday that vaccine doses now appear to have been deliberately spoiled.

Police in Grafton, about 20 miles north of Milwaukee, said in a statement that the Department, the FBI and the Food and Drug Administration were “actively” investigating the case. Police said they were made aware of the alleged tampering on Wednesday evening. Police said Thursday morning that no further information would be immediately released and declined to say whether any arrests had been made.

In a statement Wednesday evening, Aurora said the employee involved “admitted to intentionally removing the vaccine from the refrigeration.”

Aurora said she fired the employee and referred the case to authorities. The statement says nothing about a possible motive for the action.

“We continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic. We are more than disappointed that the actions of this individual are causing a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine,” the statement said.

Aurora said she would provide more information on Thursday.
