The authorities in Fullerton, California, have stated that the suspect of the deadly assault on a university staff member was a co-worker. At a press conference Thursday, Fullerton police said Chuyen Vo, 51, was arrested at his home on Wednesday night. He worked at California State University Fullerton with Steven Chan, 57 years old.
Chan, who was previously director of the school's budget and finances, was stabbed repeatedly in his car on Monday on a campus parking lot. Chan had returned to campus as a consultant in January. University President Fram Virjee offered his condolences on the deceased staff member.
"As a Titan family, we had a devastating tragedy close to home," he said. "Our hearts are with Steven Chan and his family and all members of our community on campus."
Police said that objects, including an explosive device, as well as tools commonly used for kidnapping were also found in a backpack at the scene of the crime. The backpack would have helped drive the police to Vo.
The authorities confirmed that Vo had acted alone, adding that there appeared to be no danger to the community. The university president is still urging staff, students and others not to lose sight of their environment and heightened security during the first week of his university year.
"We must remain vigilant – vigilant to support each other and help our police protect our campus and our community," said Virjee.. "We have long since decided to maintain and improve security measures on our campus, and this isolated incident remains an isolated incident."
Police said the incident appeared to be a targeted attack and that a motive could be determined in a few days. Vo is detained without bail.
