“There is a little more agreement that Trump did something wrong than the first indictment,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Independent Survey Institute at Monmouth University , in a press release. “But there are still a good number of Republican pillars who continue to stand with the former president regardless.”
Poll results also showed that just over half of respondents support a condemnation of Trump in the Senate, with 52% in favor. Many Republicans have cried foul over the impeachment process, questioning the validity of a former president’s trial. However, Democratic impeachment officials have defended their actions, in part because a conviction could prevent Trump from holding federal office in the future. Of those polled, 57% said they supported the Senate in this action against Trump.
Trump’s landmark second indictment accuses the former president of a single count of inciting insurgency as he addressed supporters at a rally on the day Congress was due to certify the results of the presidential election. Trump spent months after last November’s election touting baseless allegations of voter fraud in an attempt to undermine public confidence in the election results.
The poll found that 54% of those polled were “very confident” that the 2020 election was fair, an increase from 44% in mid-November, while a quarter of those polled said they “do not remain confident at all” in the results. Although 65% said they believed President Joe Biden won the “fair and square” election, 72% of Republicans still call Biden’s victory fraudulent. A third said he would never accept Biden as president.
“A number of alleged Republican Party leaders continue to peddle this false narrative and many others who know this claim is false have not been particularly outspoken in disavowing it. Their fellow supporters of the American public are simply following this path, ”Murray said in his statement.
According to the poll, Trump ended his term with a 56% disapproval rate, matching the lowest rating of his presidency.
The survey was conducted by telephone from January 21 to 24 among 809 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
