However, Pompeo's remarks in Kansas – which have followed trips to Iowa and Texas in recent weeks – have hardly deterred the idea that it has set itself the goal of return to an elected position.

"I've learned in life that you have to work hard, keep your head down, do your job as well as you can, and then what's going to happen will follow," he told Fox 4 Kansas City.

When questioned during the GHG event about what he sees himself in five years, he replied, "It's hard to know what I'm going to do."

"I hope I always find a place to have an impact and a place to serve," he noted, adding that "goodness knows what the Lord will bring."
