Portland, Oregon (KPTV) – Transportation Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty, Springfield Mayor Sean VanGordon and Travel Portland CEO Jeff Miller have revealed the name of the recently completed pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Interstate 405.

Ned Flanders Crossing takes its name from the beleaguered friend of Homer Simpson. The character was created by Matt Groening, a native of Portland and a graduate of Lincoln High School.

Despite many unofficial locations related to The Simpsons in Portland, there has yet to be an official honor for the series and the characters that have referred to the city for decades.

Ned Flanders Crossing, which opened to the public on June 4, is 24 feet wide and spans 200 feet on I-405.

Designed for two-way pedestrian and bicycle traffic, the earthquake-resistant bridge also adds a seismic lifeline in the event of a major tremor.

PBOT installed new traffic lights along Northwest Flanders Street at 14th and 16th Avenues, as well as a four-lane stop sign on 15th Avenue to allow pedestrians and cyclists easy access to the bridge in both ways.
