More than half of the approximately 128,000 Venezuelans who have entered Brazil in the last 18 months along the Pacaraima (RR) border, the main gateway to the neighboring country, have left the country . Some of them, 31,500, returned to Venezuela by the same route and the other 37,400 left the country by plane or other land borders.
Data comes from the Federal Police and was broadcast by the Minister of the Civil House Eliseu Padilha in his official Facebook profile on the evening of Monday (16).
Between 2017 and June this year, 127,778 Venezuelans crossed the border through Pacaraima, which is 215 km from the capital Boa Vista.
According to the Minister, the main land borders chosen for the exit from Brazil were:
- 66% of the total landed in Brazil, – Pacaraima, on the border with Venezuela
- 15% – Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, border with Paraguay and Argentina
- 6% – Guajará-Mirim in Rondônia, border with Bolivia
- By air, the main routes of exit from Brazil used by Venezuelans were Guarulhos airports (58%), Manaus (15%), Brasilia (13%) and Galeão (11%). The PF did not inform the fates of this group.
A study published in April by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) showed that the majority of Venezuelans entered Brazil by Roraima is a man, at 25 and 49, and more than half want to continue to South of the continent, especially for Argentina and Chile.
Requests for refuge
Padilha also published data on the number of Venezuelans in refuge. From the beginning of the wave of Venezuelan immigration, in 2015, until June of this year, 56,700 Venezuelans asked the federal police to seek refuge (35,500) or to reside in Brazil (11,100 ).
Only in Roraima, the main gateway for Venezuelan immigrants, the federal police registered more than 16,000 Venezuelan refugee applications in 2018 – 20% higher than the number received in 2017 and eight times more that in 2016.
Venezuelan Immigration to Roraima
The Brazilian Army estimates that the average Venezuelan entry to Roraima in the last five months was 416 people a day. Earlier this year, the United Nations estimated the number at 800, but today it is also based on an average of 400 to 500 people crossing the border every day.
There are still no precise figures on the exact number of Venezuelans living in Roraima, but a survey of the city of Boa Vista indicates that there are only 25,000 residents Venezuelans in the capital – the equivalent of 7.5% of the local population. of 332 thousand inhabitants. Of these, 65% are unemployed.
Before this study, the prefecture estimated that 40,000 Venezuelans were in the city. At that time, only the Simon Bolivar camp, which was closed and unoccupied in May, had about 1,200 Venezuelan countrymen.
The state currently has nine public shelters of about 4,000 people, five of which are open only this year. Even so, there are still Venezuelans in a street situation in 10 of the 15 state municipalities, and another shelter with a capacity of 500 people is expected to be open in the capital next Thursday (19) .
In addition, 690 immigrants have already been caught on flights of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) in São Paulo, Manaus, Cuiabá, Rio de Janeiro, Igarassu (PE) and Conde ( PB). Others are expected to soon be transported to Brasília, Cuiabá, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in the process of internalisation, which involves distributing Venezuelans newly arrived in Roraima to other states of the country.
