Doctors will go to prisons to treat HIV-infected prisoners and hepatitis B and C. Screening will be done at the entrance, during and after the confinement according to the protocols signed on Monday.
The Directorate General of Reintegration and Penitentiary Services (DGRSP) and 28 National Health Service (NHS) hospitals will sign protocols for the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and HIV / AIDS. In Portugal, according to 4.5% of the Prison population is infected with HIV, 1.2% with hepatitis B and 10.1% with hepatitis C.
The purpose of these protocols is "extremely relevant and innovative" in taking into account that, for the first time, it will be possible to achieve the objectives set by the World Health Organization, namely the treatment of all HIV infected prisoners and the elimination of hepatitis C in prisons by 2020.
