[19659002] This initiative, promoted by the Portuguese Association of Cardiovascular Intervention (APIC), aims to raise awareness of aortic stenosis, a disease that affects people over 70.
In the 39, Algarve, municipalities of Faro, Lagos,
Aortic stenosis is a disease of a heart valve that affects the elderly and, therefore, many times more often than not. his symptoms (fatigue, chest pain, fainting) are devalued by a bad association with aging. In this way, it is important to invest our efforts in the recognition of the symptoms of the disease by the population, thus allowing a faster diagnosis and a faster orientation of the patients ", explains Lino Patrício, national coordinator of the campaign "Hearts of Tomorrow"
. The aorta is the main artery in the body that carries blood from the heart. When the blood leaves the heart, it flows from the aortic valve – which has the function of preventing the blood pumped from the heart coming back – into the aortic artery.
In the presence of stenosis, the aortic valve does not open completely, becoming narrower and this decreases the blood flow of the heart.
The Hearts of Tomorrow campaign aims to increase knowledge and understanding of aortic stenosis, promoting its diagnosis and early treatment.
