The hospital Pedro Hispano, in Matosinhos, made this Thursday, for the first time in Portugal, an innovative surgery to the column. The purpose of the operation is to more easily solve the problem of patients who have the compressed vertebral canal, blocking the movements of many elderly people.
As explained by the doctor responsible for surgery, Nuno Bastos, Lumbar Laminectomy is in practice a column to decompress the vertebral canal, and the novelty is that for the first time, in Portugal, everything will be done by a purely endoscopic method .
In other words, "says the orthopedist," let's practice surgery through an incision of about one centimeter and through a tube with a high definition camera. "The operation will be done by this tube, watching the monitor, an endoscopy, with a lot less blood loss and a much faster recovery."

Nuno Bastos adds that what the doctors do in these operations is to cut some of the bone in the posterior region of the vertebra and uncompress the canal so that the nerves are free and the patient
Pedro Hispano Hospital will be the first to use this new method to perform spinal surgery, but the purpose will be to use it later in other hospitals of the National Health Service
