In an edition prepared in a "near-emergency context", because of the state subsidy cuts it was aiming for, "as pointed out by the director of the show at the 35th festival, the presentation includes 24 productions, including 9 Portuguese and 15 foreigners.

The "possible" programming, in the words of the Director of the Festival and the Almada Theater Company (CTA), host of the event, in a year where the Directorate General of Arts (DGArtes) includes the funds for the production of the Festival, suffered "a cut of 25% of the total", stressed Rodrigo Francisco.

Eleven free concerts and four street performances are part of the parallel proposals at the fair in this edition, which will be held in various venues in Almada and Lisbon, until July 18.

"Apre" – or "Bigre" in the original title – is a show of the French Company The Son of the Great Network, whose action revolves around three inhabitants of one suburban building and caricature episodes that mark the existence, according to the program of this edition of the contest.

Winner of the Molière Prize for Best Comedy in 2017, "Apre" has already opened the Almada Festival last year, having finally been chosen by the public to return to the program this year.

Subtitled in Portuguese, "Apre" is a show of actor and director Pierre Guillois, associate artist of the National Scene of Brest between 2011 and 2014, and the People's Theater of Bussang, which alternated the artistic path between theater and opera.

The first day of the Festival, which runs until July 18 in different spaces of Almada and Lisbon, the public can also attend an exhibition on the poetess, playwright and translator Ivette Centeno, laureate of this edition.

"The Pomegranate Orchard" is the title of the show designed by the architect and decorator José Manuel Castanheira, which is inaugurated this afternoon at the D. António da Costa School.

The architect also signs the design of the third part of the 40-year documentary exhibition of CTA in this city on the south bank of the Tagus.

"CTA: 40 years in Almada, Part III: The Feast" is the name of the exhibition that evokes the history of the International Theater Festival and can be visited in the multipurpose hall of this educational institution , at the heart of the initiative.

The 35th edition of the Festival is planned at 576,000 euros, including 91,000 euros (16%) from the Directorate General of Arts (DGArtes), according to Rodrigo Francisco.

The remaining funding comes, according to the director of CTA, from the local authority, partners and sponsors of the fair and its own revenues.

Of the 576,000 euros budgeted for the 35th edition, the local authority, which shares with 225,000 euros each year, increased its budget by 50,000 euros, or 275,000 euros, in order to minimize the impacts caused by public funding.
