More than six thousand grandparents gathered in the Penafiel City Park to celebrate the day dedicated to them – Grandparents' Day, a date set up by the Assembly of the Republic in 2003 thanks to the commitment of his mother-in-law Ana Elisa Couto
The day started early, with various activities dedicated to children and adults. The parishes of the municipality of Penafiel responded massively and invaded the lawn of the city park of Penafiel with blankets and tables, for the picnic lunch
Grandparents and grandchildren, with family and among them a special grandfather, Vitorino Fernandes, the oldest grandfather of the city of Penafiel, with 105 years. In his honor was made a cake with 105 meters, as much as his years.

And because the day was a tribute, the one who fought so hard for that day was not forgotten either. was instituted by the Assembly of the Republic – Ana Elisa Couto. In his memory, a bouquet of flowers was placed next to the plaque that recalls the long journey that followed in the pursuit of this dream. His sons, granddaughter and great-grandson participated in this tribute, in the honor of the paternal faithful and all the grandparents present.

Tributes made, the party continues with a lot of music and animation, traditional games, tales of the old, told by the grandparents to grandchildren and everyone who wants to hear them.
"The grandparents deserve this affection and dedication that we give them," said Antonino de Sousa, noting that this party grew year after year, calling to the city park not only the community of Fray Fidel, but also the grandparents, grandchildren and families of the region.
