A database with Portuguese federated diabetic athletes was established by the Portuguese Federation of Diabetes Associations (FPAD).
Emiliana Querido, president of the federation, explains that the Portuguese athletics and cycling federations have been contacted to gather athletes to participate in the international sporting event " Diabetic riders and cyclists for more sport for all in Europe "but that did not respond in a timely manner and decided to resort to diabetic associations. The lack of information available on federated athletes with diabetes made it difficult to disseminate the event and motivated the creation of this database.

To enroll in the database, athletes can visit diabetic associations. Emiliana says the work is paying off and many athletes are starting to learn about this initiative and to register.

The team that will represent Portugal in Italy was presented Saturday in Penacova, on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the Diabetic Association of Zona Centro.
Ana Góis is one of 20 athletes who will represent Portugal in Spolto (Italy) in this initiative. She has been practicing sport since she was a child, but the intensity of physical activity increased when she was diagnosed, she says, which allowed her to better control the disease.
Diabetes does not stop the sport
Trail is the modality that is taking place now. Feel proud to attend this event and hope to encourage other diabetics who are afraid to play sports.
Isabel Carvalho walks and considers that participating in this event tells others that it is possible to practice sports even with diabetes. He considers this subject still taboo. Any diabetic will advise to talk to sports professionals or doctors to know the control necessary to practice the sport.
Emiliana Querido stresses that glycemic control is the essential care to take and that some diabetics are afraid of sport because they do not know much about it, but stresses that it is scientifically proven that sport is an adjunct to the therapeutics of diabetes.
The Portuguese delegation that will participate in this initiative promoted by the European Union includes two endocrinologists, because the event has seminars and conferences.
28 years for the rights of diabetics
For Maria do Carmo, president of the Association of Diabetics of Zona Centro, the 28 years of this organization mean a lot of struggles for the rights of diabetics. It refers to the end of the restriction to the exercise of certain professions such as the acquired right or the opportunity to take a driver's license and not to pay insurance more expensive because of the disease. The association intends to inform the community and help to demystify diabetes. They also provide support to diabetics and, at their headquarters, have diabetic foot counseling and psychology.
