The European Union (EU) and Japan signed a free trade agreement in Tokyo on Tuesday that the President of the European Council called a "clear message" against protectionism.

"We sent a message Donald Tusk said at a press conference after the signing of the agreement.

The EU and Japan signed an Economic Partnership Agreement which, according to a joint statement by the three signing officers, "sends a powerful message promoting free, fair and regulated trade, and against protectionism."

This is the largest trade agreement negotiated by the EU and liberalizing most trade with Japan signed by Donald Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, concluding a negotiation process started in 2013
