Netflix is expected to spend up to $ 13 billion in original programming in 2018. The impressive figures, which far exceed the spending of major studios and major US television channels, were revealed by an article in the British magazine The Economist.
The numbers are almost double what was originally announced – between $ 7 and $ 8 billion – last October. At the time, they were already amazing figures, leaving in the shadows the forecast of $ 4 billion by Amazon for investment in the original content and the billion dollars that Apple would use to launch production runs for its streaming service.
According to the publication, Netflix intends to spend this amount for 82 films and up to 700 television programs – between the original and licensed series – and humorous and journalistic specials. This material includes attractions produced in 21 different countries.
Only the 82 films that Netflix plans to release in 2018 are equivalent to the first releases that major studios have planned for this year – all together. By way of comparison, the most anticipated studio, Warner, will bring 22 films to theaters here by the end of the year. Disney, meanwhile, will only have 10 releases – including titles by Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm.
The company's goal is to prepare for the upcoming release of Disney in 2019 and potentially other studios in its catalog, as Fox has already done, in producing enough material to keep the public ready to keep their signatures. And preferably, of course, interest new subscribers in your unique offer of unique and original content.
