New firearms licenses increased by 31% in 2017 – Observer

The number of citizens obtaining new licenses for the use and possession of weapons increased by almost 31% in 2017 compared to 2016. Last year, 1,683 new licenses were issued were issued, 397 more than the previous year. According to the Jornal de Notícias, which quotes the figures of the PSP, more than 500 000 Portuguese are allowed to use weapons: about 300 000 can have a firearm at home – life permits obtained between 1949 and 2006 – and about 227,000 are allowed to have weapons, whether for hunting, personal defense, film fairs and theaters, among others.
