The Centro Materno Infantil do Norte has performed for the first time in Portugal a transvaginal surgery aimed at removing tumors from the uterus, said the gynecologist responsible for the intervention, Hélder Ferreira.
With the use of an endoscopic camera, the new technique, performed in the city of Porto, consists of "visualizing the interior of the uterus" by transvaginal route and allows a greater accuracy in the identification and elimination of intrauterine lesions. Visualization, called hysteroscopy, allows to identify pathologies and lesions such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions or scars inside the uterus and to treat or remove them simultaneously. .
Helder Ferreira, coordinator of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Unit, said the new equipment makes the procedure "more reproducible, also making it faster and safer", compared to the newer. other techniques that have been used, such as uterine scraping, removal of the uterus or hysteroscopy with current power. "If we can shorten that time, we can automatically reduce the pain and we can do more procedures without anesthesia," he said.
According to the gynecologist, the procedure is also "easier to perform" because it does not do any anesthesia, nor to electrical energy, which "most often causes pain and injury to patients ". One of the advantages of this technique is also the "early return home of patients", which, together with the reduction of time spent in the hospital, avoids the "high risk of infections".
Helena Leite, 69 years old and natural was one of seven patients who underwent this technique. The patient left at the foot of the operating room, after an intervention that lasted about five minutes, and admitted that waiting time made her nervous. But that "was not expensive," he added. "When I was on the block, I thought it was going to be bad, because I was scared, since all the interventions I had done were under anesthesia."
