Casado won a more expressive victory than expected, beating Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, "heiress" of Rajoy, by 1701 votes (57.2%) against 1250 votes (42%).
Santamaría left as a favorite, having obtained most of the support in the first phase of the race in early July. But Casado managed to reverse the situation by getting the support of the eliminated candidates, including former Defense Minister María Dolores de Cospedal and José Manuel García-Margallo, former Foreign Minister.
