Presidents transferred to the National Hall of Fame two years after death – Politics

A bill passed yesterday in Parliament, drafted by several deputies of the PS and the PSD, proposes that heads of state and former heads of state can be transferred to the National Hall of Fame two years after its death.

In 2016, Parliament unanimously approved an amendment to the law to establish that the deposit of remains can only occur 20 years after the death of citizens. Without questioning "the opportunity" and the spirit of the law passed in 2016, MEPs say that it "is important to ensure that the tax due to heads of state can be provided with the necessary time.

In addition to the parliamentary leaders of the PS and the PSD, Carlos César and Fernando Negrao, the bill is signed by the socialists Miranda Calha, Sousa Pinto, Hortense Martins, Bacelar de Vasconcelos and Duarte Pacheco (PSD). At the same time, a draft resolution was signed, with the agreement of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, so that the honors of the National Hall of Fame be awarded to Mário Soares, who died on January 7, 2017.
