Seven cases of measles are confirmed in the state of Rio de Janeiro

On Friday, the State Department of Health confirmed the occurrence of seven cases of measles in the state of Rio de Janeiro, five in the city of Rio and two in Duque de Caxias, in the Baixada Fluminense. All episodes are related to the Faculty of Law of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where the first case of the disease in the state was registered after 18 years.

The samples were analyzed by Fiocruz, a reference laboratory of the Ministry of Health. Since the first suspicion of the circulation of measles, SES has been working in partnership with the municipalities.

On July 3, the municipal health department conducted a block vaccination campaign on the campus of the Faculty of Law. The UFRJ and, with SES, have taken a series of measures to prevent and analyze cases.

Measles protection is part of the Viral Triple and Tetra Viral vaccines, available according to the Ministry of Health vaccination schedule for children between 12 and 15 months of age. Immunization coverage against the disease for children of one year in the state is 95%. Children under one year of age and adults under 49 who have not been vaccinated should be vaccinated. Those who took both doses of the vaccine do not need to take a new dose.
