An Ecuadorian court on Tuesday ordered the detention of former president Rafael Correa as part of his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of a political opponent. The former head of state, who led the country since Latin America between 2007 and 2017 and who now lives in Belgium, the country of origin of his wife, denies the allegations.
In 2012, deputy Fernando Balda was abducted in Bogota, Colombia, where he fled due to mounting tensions with the then President. Balda accuses Correa of having planned the kidnapping. At the time, the MP was facing charges related to a failed coup d'état against the president and was sentenced to one year in prison for undermining the security of the state.
On Tuesday, Judge Daniella Camacho stated that he was interpellating Interpol. in order to obtain the extradition of Rafael Correa. The judge accused the former president of failing to comply with the order to appear in court in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Instead, Correa was presented to the Ecuadorian consulate in Brussels, which the judge considers a violation of his orders.
Following the ruling, supporters of the former president stood at the door of the court, shouting slogans against current president Lenin Moreno. Correa insisted several times nothing to do with the kidnapping, which was intercepted by the police a few hours later.
