The former head of the Aum Shinrikyo (Supreme Truth) sect, Shoko Asahara, who was sentenced to death for the sarin attack in the Tokyo subway in 1995, was executed this morning, confirmed the official source of the Japanese government. According to the Efe News Agency, six of the 13 members of the sect sentenced to death were also hanged, but a government spokesman only confirms the execution of Asahara.
Chief of Staff Yoshihide Suga said Friday that the authorities are taking every precaution to avoid retaliation from supporters of the former leader.
