An explosion in an industrial park in southwest China's Sichuan Province left 19 dead and 12 injured on Friday.

According to a statement from the Chinese government, quoted by Reuters, the explosion occurred Thursday at 11:30 pm in a chemical plant in Yibin City, Sichuan. The facilities, consisting of three three-storey buildings, belong to Yibin Hengda Technology, a plant that produces chemicals for the food and pharmaceutical industries.

The explosion caused a great fire and clouds of smoke who left the factory covered the sky and the buildings were badly damaged. The fire will be already controlled this Friday

China has made efforts to improve safety standards at work, but industrial accidents continue to be common in the country.

In 2015, 173 people died in an explosion in a chemical depot in the port city of Tianjin in the north-east of the country. In 2017, eight people were killed and nine others wounded in an explosion at a petrochemical plant in Shandong Province
