At the same time, another demonstration was held in solidarity with the bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua, mediators of dialogue, through which the crisis must be overcome. In this march, participants asked for the resignation of Daniel Ortega.
"Although it hurts you, even if it hurts you, the commander is there, Daniel, Daniel, the people are with you", sang the Sandinistas, for the most part officials and police officers.
"I am here to support the commander, the only president who has managed to eliminate corruption," said one of the protesters.
In the other demonstration, thousands of people, mostly Catholics, demonstrated in solidarity with the Nicaraguan bishops, already victims of physical aggression.
During the "Pilgrimage for Bishops, Defenders of Truth and Justice", protesters waved the flag of Nicaragua and the Catholic Church and demanded justice for the deaths caused by anti-government demonstrations.
Ortega strongly criticized the Nicaraguan bishops, whom he described as scammers for proposing early elections in March 2019. An examination is scheduled for 2021.
The Vicar General of the Diocese of Managua Carlos Aviles, thanked the protesters and said that churches will always be open "to those who need it", noting that the bishops have always advocated dialogue to get out of the crisis.
Nicaragua is going through the most bloody socio-political crisis since the 1980s, also under the presidency of Ortega.
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the United Nations Human Rights Council accuse the Nicaraguan Government of "killings, extrajudicial executions, ill-treatment, torture and arbitrary detentions", accusations that Daniel Ortega denied.
Since April 18, Central America has witnessed violent protests and clashes that, according to human rights groups, left more than 300 people dead and more than 2,000 injured.
Protesters accuse President Daniel Ortega and his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo, of abuse of power and corruption.
Daniel Ortega, 72, has been in power since 2007 after a first term. 1979 to 1990.
