Following a report from the California Department of Health, pharmaceutical company Moderna said it was investigating reports of allergic reactions in patients receiving its vaccine.

Reuters reports that several people have had possible allergic reactions during vaccination at a San Diego vaccination center. State officials preceded the company’s announcement by recommending that healthcare providers stop vaccinating this specific batch, delegated as no. 41L20A, as authorities investigate possible side effects.

Officials confirmed on January 17, more allergic reactions were observed from this specific vaccine lot.

“Our goal is to deliver the COVID vaccine in a safe, timely and equitable manner,” said Erica Pan, state epidemiologist.

“A higher than usual number of possible allergic reactions have been reported with a specific lot of Moderna vaccine given at a community vaccination clinic. Fewer than 10 people required medical attention in a 24 hour period.”

Highlighting the low likelihood of these findings, similar anaphylactic episodes in Moderna COVID-19 vaccine recipients are rare, occurring at a rate of approximately 1 in 100,000 injections given.

Of this batch of vaccine, more than 330,000 doses were administered to 287 providers in California. Only the San Diego vaccination center has reported adverse reactions in patients.

“Out of extreme caution and also recognizing the extremely limited supply of vaccines, we recommend that suppliers use other available vaccine stocks and suspend administration of Moderna Lot 041L20A vaccines until investigated by the CDC, FDA, Moderna and the state is complete, ”Pan continued. “We will provide an update as we learn more.”

Some 307,300 doses of vaccine from this batch are still in stock. And a total of 1,272,200 doses were produced in the lot under investigation.
