Possible meteor sighting thrills Texans on social media

Several residents of North Texas saw an unusual sight on Sunday night – a fireball flying in the sky.

The American Meteorological Society received several reports of what is believed to be a meteor from residents of the Dallas area around 9 p.m. Sunday. The organization has not yet had a chance to review the reports, so there is no official confirmation of the meteor sighting on Monday.

Cameras in downtown Dallas caught the streak of light across the sky.

The sighting got Texans talking on social media.

The meteor is probably part of the Perseid meteor showers, a phenomenon that occurs every year between mid-July and the end of August. The meteor is caused by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, the largest object known to repeatedly pass through Earth.
