At a recent American Legion meeting, JE Lanier Post 27 in Richmond Hill, Post Chaplin Mike Matuzsan received the Post 27 Legionnaire of the Year award for 2021.
The award was presented by Georgia Department Commander Mark Shreve.
“Chaplin Matuzsan’s efforts to support Station operations throughout the year have been a beacon of service and bring him great honor, to Station 27 and the American Legion as a whole.” Station Commander John Ellis Sr. said, “Mike has worked tirelessly to attend Thursday office hours, providing advice and assistance to the station leadership team throughout the year, her presence and prayers at meetings, and her help with Legion projects have been the core of our article in this trying year of COVID. “
Upon receiving the award, Chaplin Matuzsan said: “It is quite an honor to receive this from our position. He tells you that the things you do make a difference and that some days it’s hard to see. But today the picture is clear and I’m happy I was able to help. It has been a difficult year.
Following the presentation, members of Post 27 voted to renew its Veteran Children’s Scholarship program, establish a JROTC recognition program, and participate in the Boys State program in the coming year. The post also established its first public service recognition program to honor members of law enforcement, firefighters and the EMT community with recognition awards over the coming year.
This was followed by remarks from Thomas Nash of Team Savannah 4 Veterans on the outreach and assistance programs they are implementing to help veterans in need. These range from helping deliver food to veterans in the mini-house project in Savannah, building or renovating wheelchair ramps, and helping house repair projects. veterans for those who need them most.
To cap off the meeting, the Shreve Department Commander briefed members on state initiatives for goal setting and programming at the state and district levels. Post 27 was the 39th post he visited on his goal of visiting 100 posts in his first 90 days in office.
The American Legion JE Lanier Post 27 meets at the Senior Citizens Center on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.
