Forecasters warned that tropical storms could form in the Atlantic and that Friday could threaten areas of the Bahamas recently devastated by Hurricane Dorian.
The new storm should not contain nearly the destructive power of Dorian, a Category 5 hurricane that killed at least 50 people and caused considerable damage across the islands. But the storm could pose a challenge to rescuers, who were still looking for about 1,300 missing people on Thursday.
On Friday at 2 am, the approaching storm system, with sustained winds of 30 km / h, was about 210 km southeast of the Abaco Islands, which were badly hit, according to the National Hurricane Center. It was expected to strengthen and lead tropical storm force winds (defined as sustained winds of 39 to 73 miles to the hour) and heavy rains over northwestern Bahamas on Friday and Saturday, forecasters said. A tropical storm warning was in effect for much of the region.
Parts of the east coast of Florida could be subject to high winds and heavy rains over the weekend, and residents were advised to monitor the progress of the storm. The storm was moving slowly Friday morning, just three miles to the hour, but forecasters were expecting an acceleration throughout the weekend.
We did not expect a significant storm surge, forecasters said. However, it was expected that it would rain in parts of the Bahamas, while the Florida coast in southeastern Georgia could receive two to four inches.
The storm would call Humberto if it became strong enough to be classified as the ninth tropical storm of the year. The National Hurricane Center said at 11 pm Thursday, it was likely that this force would reach 80% within 48 hours and 90% within five days.
