The World Health Organization (WHO) said clinical trials on the possible effects of the vaccine on pregnant women have not yet been completed.
“While pregnancy puts women at a higher risk of severe Covid-19, the use of this vaccine in pregnant women is currently not recommended, unless they are at high risk, like agents health, ”the WHO said. Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said limited data was available on the safety of vaccines, including mRNA, given during pregnancy and called for more clinical trials and studies.
“Limited data are currently available from developmental and reproductive toxicity studies in animals. No safety problem has been demonstrated in rats given the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine before or during pregnancy; studies on the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are ongoing. Studies in pregnant women are planned, ”the CDC said.
The WHO says pregnant women with Covid have an increased risk of serious illness, including illness resulting in intensive care admission, mechanical ventilation and death, compared to non-pregnant women of childbearing age.
Additionally, pregnant women with Covid may be at increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as premature labor, compared to uninfected pregnant women.
