At least three pregnant women recently hospitalized with complications from the coronavirus have contracted the British variant of the pathogen, the Department of Health said on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, health care providers announced on Tuesday evening that the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign would soon be expanded to include pregnant women.
Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) said they received numerous inquiries over the past day from women seeking vaccinations, as reports of COVID-positive pregnant women hospitalized in serious condition increased.
The health ministry issued a statement stressing that the vaccine poses no threat to pregnant women.

“According to experts, there is no biological mechanism that could harm the mother or the fetus,” the statement read. “Women who received the vaccine without knowing they were pregnant reported no abnormal effects during pregnancy compared to their unvaccinated counterparts.”
Pregnant women were previously not included in priority groups for the vaccine and could not schedule appointments to be vaccinated. In the past, health ministry regulations have even banned giving the vaccine during pregnancy because it has not been tested on pregnant women in clinical trials.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old woman, seven months pregnant, was transferred earlier to Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva as medics fight for her life. She gave birth by caesarean section and is currently hospitalized in very serious condition. The baby is in stable condition.
A five-month pregnant woman was hospitalized in the intensive care unit in Sheba and another woman was taken to the intensive care unit in Laniado Hospital in Netanya.
Four pregnant women with coronavirus have been hospitalized in recent days at Maayanei Hayeshua Hospital in Bnei Brak, one of them has gone into labor. The four needed breathing assistance but were not given oxygen.
