A game that was originally scheduled for earlier in the season and then postponed to Saturday has proven to be a blessing for the South Medford women’s football team.
The Panthers were in shape mid-season against Summit in a 0-0 draw at Spiegelberg Stadium, and that gave them a chance to see where they stand against a Storm team that will almost certainly be in the playoffs. playoffs 6A.
“It was just a great battle,” said South Medford head coach Dave Potter. “It felt like a state tournament game and it was a lot of fun to play.”
Both teams had a fair share of opportunities – South had seven shots on goal to five for Summit – but the game’s final score was indicative of the strong defensive battle between the two teams.
For the South (5-3-1), its defensive line was organized by Drew Hampson, Tyler Hampson, Lexie Clark, Natalie Scheuneman and Makayla Peterson, goaltender Eve Lynx recording a clean sheet that included three saves.
Isabelle Cruz also scored in the midfield, which played an essential role in its positioning, which allowed to chain the passing streaks for the Panthers.
Less than 24 hours earlier, South claimed a 2-1 victory at Grants Pass that ended with a game-winning goal for Brooke Fairbanks in the final three minutes. Although Potter said he feared the team would have tired legs heading into the game against Summit (4-1-4), the Panthers did not let it show.
“As tired as they may have been, it was the smartest game we played from start to finish,” Potter said. “They never played reactionary football, they played with their minds focused and their eyes raised.”
ASHLAND 1, NORTH EUGENE 1: At Ashland, senior Luna Wilhelm scored in the 30th minute on an assist from Ini Hammond and Ashland went unbeaten with the Midwestern League draw.
Zadi Burke had eight saves to boost the Grizzlies (6-0-4, 4-0-1 MWL), who were outscored 17-4 by North Eugene (6-0-2, 1-0-2) but not worse for wear.
North Eugene’s only goal came after a corner bounced in front of the goal before it was finally pushed into the net.
LA PIN 3, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1: Cascade Christian had an advantage in possession and penalties, but La Pine took advantage of his limited opportunities to secure a victory at US Cellular.
Cascade Christian (0-7) tied the game in the 25th minute on a goal from Bella Williams, with an assist to Katie Erno.
La Pine (3-6-1) broke the deadlock with two walks in the second half.
Erno recorded eight shots and the Challengers had 14 in total.
Boys
NORTH MEDFORD 4, SHELDON 1: In Eugene, behind a hat trick from senior Ulysses Gomez, North Medford took care of the road business for a Southwestern Conference victory.
Gomez put Black Tornado (4-4-1, 2-2-1 SWC) on the board seven minutes into the game by removing the ball from a Sheldon defender and shooting into the net. North was leading 2-0 at halftime after senior Daniel Ortiz played a strong ball to senior William Gillock for the score.
Gomez scored his second goal 10 minutes after the start of the second half, then fouled inside the box and took the ensuing penalty to clinch the hat trick.
Jeffrey Cruz and Jesus Duarte also put in some quality performances for North.
Dom Graziano of Sheldon scored for Sheldon (2-6, 1-4).
ASHLAND 4, NORTH EUGENE 1: A birthday present for senior Ashland Davidson Graham came in the form of two goals and a Midwestern League victory for the Grizzlies at home over North Eugene.
On his 18th birthday, Graham gave Ashland an early lead with a rebound goal in the second minute and then added the deciding second-half goal on an unassisted left-footed shot.
Ashland (4-3-1, 3-2 MWL) led 2-0 at halftime with goals from Graham and Pedro Guimaraes.
In the 58th minute, Luke Reddish scored an assist from Guimaraes to give Ashland a 3-0 lead.
Nathaniel Rivera scored for North Eugene (0-6-3, 0-2-1) from a penalty after Ashland fouled in the box.
Ashland’s Mina Scheppmann played solid at the goalkeeper in a post-foul relief effort, and also performed well on the field at the back.
ST. MARY’S 10, LAKEVIEW 6: At Lakeview, sophomore St. Mary’s Chris Kranenburg joined the top flight with six goals to help the Crusaders outlast Lakeview in a very open Wild West League game.
According to Oregon School Activities Association records, seven goals are the record for goals scored in a game in the state’s men’s football history, as three players – Sergio Ruiz of Delphian, Luke Beamon of Brookings-Harbor and Edson Fuentes de Taft – have each accomplished once.
Six goals have been scored in a game eight times, including twice by Gavin Decker of Rogue River during the 2016 season. The most recent occasion came on September 16 when William Gillock of North Medford scored all goals. of his team in a 6-1 victory over Crater.
