Preparatory football: Emerald Ridge takes down the Warriors

In a non-league match scheduled to replace the canceled Stadium Jam rivalry contest against Meadowdale, Edmonds-Woodway lost to the Puyallup Emerald Ridge Jaguars 43-22 at Edmonds Stadium on Friday.

After forcing the Warriors to kick in their first practice, the Jaguars took a quick lead when second-year quarterback Jacob Schakel hit one of his receivers in stride for a 42-yard touchdown. Both teams traded punts and then the Warriors missed the ball on their third possession, leading to another Emerald Ridge touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

The first-half struggles continued for Edmonds-Woodway, who failed to generate much offense and returned the ball to the Jaguars. Emerald Ridge scored again when Schakel hit his sophomore Preston Wynn for the 40-yard touchdown bomb.

The Jaguars continue to rack it up in the first half, with Denzel Boston, engaged in D-1, catching a screen pass and using his legs to score. The Jaguars scored another touchdown and safety before half-time, leading 36-0 at the break

But it would be a two-part story. In the third quarter, the Warriors forced a turnaround and took over, and senior quarterback Alec Rust broke two tackles for a first down that kept the drive alive. Edmonds-Woodway ran all the way for senior Trey Smith to hit him from 2 yards, and the score was 36-7.

The two teams traded goods again, with Emerald Ridge only scoring once again on an Edmonds-Woodway fumble. But then the Warriors hit the road. Nathanuel Marinez scored on an 8-yard run, and Steven Warren Jr. also scored on the next practice.

The match ended with Emerald Ridge running out of time and a final score of 43-22.

Edmonds-Woodway falls to 0-2. The Warriors will be looking to bounce back on the road next week against the Snohomish Panthers.
