The country's largest firefighting union supports Joe Biden as president because of his long-standing support for firefighters, the union leader said on Monday in defense of the endorsement.

President Harold Schaitberger of the International Association of Firefighters, who represents 316,000 full-time firefighters, told "Fox & Friends" that the former vice president had been supporting the union for 40 years.

"We are loyal," said Schaitberger. "We respect and reward those who are with us. In this case, we are with Joe Biden. "

BIDEN SNAGS FIRST IMPORTANT ADOPTION OF THE UNION IN 2020

The union's approval on Monday took place as Biden entered for the first time in the election campaign as a candidate for the Democratic presidency in 2020.

The union's support provided Biden with its first major support.

The union has not supported anyone for the presidency in 2016. No other major union has announced a candidacy for a candidate for the presidential candidacy of 2020.

Schaitberger denied that firefighter contributions from the pro-Trump IAFF were used to support Biden.

"We use the money they choose to contribute to our political CAP, we use it on their behalf on the political scene," he said.

"Our job as a union is to support the candidate who supports the problems that improve their career, their profession and their economic future," he said. "It's our role. We do not question their personal opinions. "
