Elevation Learning, a local tutoring program, has found a new base of operations at LaGrange’s new and used downtown LaGrange bookstore, Pretty Good Books.
Elevation Learning will now occupy the office upstairs of the bookstore and provide tutoring services to area students and more. It will also offer ESL classes and group classes for homeschooled people.
The two companies decided to collaborate because of a common desire to improve literacy and understanding of learning in the region while providing other learning services to the community, said Chase Davis, director Marketing Executive for Elevation Learning.
“One of the biggest issues, especially with COVID, the rise of COVID and kids going virtual, we noticed that the GMAS scores that measure reading were really down this year,” Davis said. “Although there are freelance tutors at LaGrange, there really isn’t a place to go. We wanted a place where the students could meet one-on-one, and we could put them in touch with tutors.
Elevation Learning will have as many as five tutors available to students in each session. Walk-in people are welcome, but participants are advised to register and pre-pay for the services on its website.
Elevation Learning’s current hours of operation match those of Pretty Good Books, which are currently 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
In addition to its paid services, Elevation Learning will be offering a free book club starting September 21.
The club will feature books on three different learning levels: Beginner Readers, Intermediate Readers, and Mature Readers. New readers will discuss the first Magic Treehouse book, older readers will investigate the Mysterious Benedict Society, and adult readers will explore the desert planet of Arrakis in DUNE.
“All we ask is that [participants] buy the book, ”Davis said.
For bookstore owner Joshua Rigsby, the partnership encompasses what he hoped to accomplish when he moved downtown earlier this year and what he hopes to continue doing in the community for years to come.
“We’re thrilled with it because it really aligns with what we want to do and it also draws people into the store,” Rigsby said. “It also uses the space we have here and helps build a better relationship with the community.”
