Prince Markie Dee of iconic ’80s hip-hop group The Fat Boys has died aged 52, a rep said.
Fat Boys manager Louis Gregory confirmed death with a post on Twitter Thursday night.
“Forever in my heart. Prince Markie Dee was more than a rapper; he was one of my best and closest friends,” Louis “Uncle Louie” Gregory’s tweet read.
“My heart is breaking today because I lost a brother. I will always love you Mark and I will cherish everything you taught me. Tomorrow is your birthday, swing my big brother.
The Fat Boys burst onto the scene with their single “All You Can Eat” in 1985. Their self-titled 1984 debut album was produced by rap legend Kurtis Blow and included the singles “Jail House Rap” and “Can You. Feel It? ”
They also starred in the movie “Disorderlies” in 1987 and made a cameo appearance in the classic movie “Krush Groove” in 1985.
The group’s fusion of freestyle beats and self-deprecating lyrics influenced generations of musicians and lyricists who mimicked their burlesque style.
“They were figuratively (without weighty jokes) the greatest act in hip-hop at one time,” Questlove wrote on Instagram.
“Like the first act that showed this culture can have real international legs… They were so dope we just took them for granted. They did dope routines and dances, the albums went gold and platinum. I made movies, TV shows and commercials They explored territories for the first time that seem today yawn a Tuesday. “
