Peter Morgan, who created The Crown, said he based the series on facts, with elements of the series produced under creative license.

Speaking on Love Your Weekend, Spencer said: ‘The concern for me is that people see a program like this and forget it’s fiction.

“ They assume, especially foreigners, that I find Americans telling me that they watched The Crown as if they had taken a history lesson. Well, they didn’t.

“It’s very hard, there’s a lot of guesswork and invention, isn’t it?” You can hang it on the facts, but the elements in between are not facts.

Spencer also reveals during his appearance on the show that he turned down a request from the show producers to film at Althorp, his family’s stately home.

‘The Crown asked if they could film at Althorp and I obviously said no. ”
