The British home of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has new residents.

Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank have moved into the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, PEOPLE confirms.

“Frogmore is a private residence of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and any arrangement is theirs,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson told PEOPLE. Frogmore Cottage remains Meghan and Harry’s British residence.

A source points out that the house remains Meghan and Harry’s UK home and that they are happy to have it occupied by Harry’s first cousin Eugenie, who is expecting her first child early next year, and Jack.

“Frogmore Cottage continues to be the home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the UK,” the source says, “and they are delighted to be able to open their home to Princess Eugenie and Jack as they found their own family.

The sun, who broke the story first, quoted a source who said: “The moving vans came in the middle of the night and cleaned up the chalet. They certainly didn’t want to be seen. Empty their house and put them back. Keys is a strong enough sign that Harry and Meghan are not planning to return. It appears they are doing what is necessary as they consider extending their stay in the United States perhaps permanently. “

Eugenie and Jack previously resided at Ivy Cottage in Kensington Palace in London, but have strong ties to Windsor. The couple married in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in October 2018 and Eugenie’s parents – Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson – live a few miles away at the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park. Eugenie’s grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, are also nearby at Windsor Castle.

Prospective parents have spent a lot of time in Windsor amid the coronavirus lockdown this year.

In September, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said Harry had “fully covered” the costs of renovating Frogmore Cottage, which were said to be around $ 3 million. The costs were originally paid for by the Sovereign Grant, the UK’s earmarked fund for royalty funded by taxpayers.

“A contribution has been made to the Sovereign Grant by the Duke of Sussex,” the statement said. “This contribution originally proposed by Prince Harry fully covered the necessary renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage, a property of Her Majesty The Queen, and will remain the British residence of the Duke and his family.”

The couple moved to Frogmore Cottage in April 2019, shortly before their son, Archie, was born. The original plan was to reimburse the renovation costs in installments. The offer to settle their debts was made “proactively” by the couple, a source told PEOPLE, adding that the couple wanted to make sure there was no continued drain on public funds so that they were striving to become financially independent.

“It is an important step that they wanted to take,” said a source close to them. “It’s something that they’ve wanted to do proactively from the start. They’ve taken the initiative to do it.”

Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, moved to her hometown of Los Angeles earlier this year after spending time in Vancouver, Canada, after their retirement as senior members of the Royal Family. Over the summer, they bought a house in Santa Barbara, located about 100 miles north of Los Angeles, partially funded by a mortgage.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into their family home in July this year,” a representative for the couple told PEOPLE. “They have settled into the quiet privacy of their community since their arrival and hope that this will be respected for their neighbors, as well as for them as a family.”
