Stephen Hawking passed away last March

The former nurse Stephen Hawking has been suspended and faces an allegation of misconduct regarding his care.

Patricia Dowdy, 61, who worked for this renowned scientist for 15 years, was temporarily suspended in 2016.

A six-week hearing of the Council of Nurses and Midwives (NMC), which began in February and will run until March 21, is being held in camera in London.

Ms. Dowdy told Sunday at the Mall that she was angry and that she did not want to comment.

Professor Hawking died at home in Cambridge last March at the age of 76, having lived with motor neuron disease for more than 50 years.

The alleged misconduct of Ms. Dowdy, of Ipswich in Suffolk, took place in Cambridge, according to the NMC Hearing Registry.

Matthew McClelland, director of fitness for the nursing profession, said his legislation and guidelines were "very clear: hearings will generally be held in public."

But he added that "in some cases, including in this particular case, there are reasons that this does not always happen".

This could be "due to the health of the people involved in the case, or to the fact that the allegations are related to the health status of the nurse or midwife", a- he added.
