Two weeks after residents and visitors to Provincetown reported coughing and congestion, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed 132 positive cases of COVID emerged over the busy July 4 weekend.
The majority of these cases come from vaccinated people.
A total of 89 of these new cases are from Massachusetts residents, including 39 residing in Barnstable County, according to a statement from the Provincetown Select Board, the Provincetown Board of Health and the County of Health and Environment Department. Senator Julian Cyr said most of the COVID cases appearing in Provincetown come from vaccinated people who have reported “mild symptoms.”
Health officials have urged residents and visitors to Provincetown, whether or not vaccinated, “to take precautions due to the rise in COVD-19 cases.”
Health officials are urging Provincetown residents, businesses and visitors to: get tested, stay home if they feel sick, avoid crowded places, and wear masks indoors.
“All unvaccinated people, including children under the age of 12, are required to wear masks both outdoors in crowded areas where social distancing cannot be achieved and in indoor public spaces, in accordance with to CDC guidelines, “health officials said in the statement.
Crowded venues where social distancing is not likely are strongly encouraged to check guests’ vaccination certificates prior to entry.
The investigation into the COVID case is still ongoing, “and the numbers are subject to change as the situation evolves,” health officials said in a statement.
