GingerOfOz, a hacker known for creating handheld consoles, posted a video detailing his latest project, the PS2 Eclipse, a PlayStation 2 handheld console. It is a full 3D printed console that has a battery life of around two. hours and a half. The Eclipse runs off a real PS2 motherboard, albeit significantly scaled down, so games run on original hardware, avoiding slowdowns and emulation imperfections. However, it does not support discs, as the disc drive would be too large and bulky to be reasonably attached to a handheld. Instead, attached to the motherboard are the internal components of a PS2 memory card running Free McBoot, a homebrew app that allows your PS2 to run backups and homebrews from a USB drive.
This does, however, cause some problems. Since the PS2 uses USB 1.1, load times can be considerable, approaching a minute for some titles, according to the video from GingerOfOz. Another known issue is that the PS2 will not recognize the controller on “quite a few games”, making them unplayable, although GingerOfOz seems confident that these issues can be fixed with software fixes. While there isn’t a compatibility list available, he says if a historic PS2 title isn’t showing running in the video, it’s probably because it wouldn’t work. (For reference, some of the titles shown while running on the Eclipse include the Super monkey ball games, the Grand Theft Auto trilogy, Person 3 and 4, Kingdom Hearts, Katamari Damacy and Metal Gear Solid 3: Substance.)
GingerOfOz will not sell the Eclipse on commission like it has for its other handhelds in the past; however, it encourages users to create their own. Her video provides an overview of the process and her website points to additional resources, and would be updated with more details in the future.
