Last week, the PlayStation 4 received its latest system software update. First reported by Destruction Games on Twitter, the update apparently fixed the CMOS issue that was preventing PS4 console owners from playing digital discs and games if the internal clock battery died. Several people have now been able to play disc and digital games on PS4 consoles with dead batteries since installing the update.
The problem started when gamers discovered that if the console’s internal clock battery was dead, it prevented them from playing both digital games and offline disc games due to the way the system number of trophies has been configured. As long as gamers could log into the PlayStation Network, that wouldn’t be a problem, but if Sony ever shut down the PS4’s servers, the console would eventually stop playing the games altogether. It would also affect the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 5 consoles to a lesser extent. Sony had promised that they were working on a solution to the problem and it seems that version 9.0 of the system software fixed the problem with a few caveats.
Destruction Games reported that games on disk can now be played without crashes on startup. He could also win trophies, although these wouldn’t have a date or timestamp, but instead would have a blank space where they would be displayed. He also claimed that other people have tested the system with digital games and these have worked as well, although this is something he has not tested himself. @ DoesItPlay1, the people who first brought the issue to light, also said they would do additional testing to verify that the issue was resolved.
My date when starting my PS4 was 1969 and 5:00 p.m. which is the default date and time for the PS4 with a dead battery so my battery is still dead.

The latest software update also allowed players to view their PS5 trophy lists on a PS4 console as well as those of their friends. A change to the Party function also allows owners to dissolve the party without having to first remove all players. Sony has yet to say whether the update has indeed fixed the CMOS bug, but if we hear anything official, we’ll be sure to let you know.
