The OLED Switch launches tomorrow, and many of you are undoubtedly eagerly awaiting your console to arrive at your doorstep. The thrill of new game material is certainly one of life’s little pleasures, but don’t let your excitement overwhelm you like it did for us.

As you know from our recent review, we’ve had the Switch OLED for a week now, and when it arrived from Nintendo we were literally anxious to transfer all of our data from our old console. We followed the transfer guide to the letter and got everything set up in record time – except for one very important thing: our Animal Crossing: New Horizons Isle.

While Nintendo supports console-to-console data transfer, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is different. You can only save one island to a single system, so island data is treated somewhat differently from regular backup data. It also cannot be saved using Nintendo Switch Online’s cloud save service. Instead, you have to use a special transfer tool to move the island from one console to another – and guess what we forgot to do?

Yes, like complete fools, we transferred the system and then handed over our old Switch launch model to a family member, who duly created their own Animal Crossing Island on the console under a new account – removing the ability to transfer our old island to the OLED Switch. And before you ask, no, we hadn’t activated the island’s save system either (not that we would have enjoyed the challenge of convincing Nintendo that our old Switch had been “lost or broken”, of course. ).

This means that we have effectively lost many months of progress, islanders, and memories due to our over-enthusiasm. Don’t be in the same boat, and be sure to transfer your island to your new OLED Switch before giving the old console to someone else!
