US News & World Report has ranked Portland State University as one of the nation’s top universities for its innovative strategies that help students succeed.
The Guide to the best colleges 2022 recognizes PSU as Oregon’s best national university for social mobility and service learning, as well as Oregon’s most innovative campus.
The new assessments reflect PSU’s commitment to transforming the lives of students with meaningful learning experiences in Portland and beyond, said PSU President Stephen Percy.
“These rankings speak to the heart of everything we do and why we do it,” he said. “We are always looking for new ways to serve our students and our city, and this has never been truer than during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
When PSU transitioned to fully distance learning in 2020, it created new, flexible online options for meeting students where they are. For example, students can now register for certain courses that allow them to Attend anywhere, a new format that offers remote access to in-person courses.
The university also created the new Summer Bridge Scholarship Program, a free four-week introduction to college life and academics for more than 200 students whose high school studies have been disrupted by COVID-19. Summer Bridge gives them effective learning skills, a solid foundation in college math and writing, and mentors to help them connect and succeed.
PSU has expanded its Four years free and Transfers end for free programs to cover the tuition and fees of a larger number of Oregon students. This type of financial support helps economically disadvantaged students who receive Pell Scholarships graduate from PSU, the key metric behind the US News Social Mobility ranking. PSU ranked No. 51 nationally out of 391 schools on this list.
The State of Portland is also tied with Stanford University at No.7 on the list of best schools for service learning.
PSU students are required to complete community service projects as part of their courses, with approximately 4,000 students volunteering in approximately 200 service-learning courses each year. PSU has the largest Senior Synthesis Program, the last step of the nationally recognized PSU University study program.
Capstone students volunteer at PSU Landing at the First United Methodist Church, new emergency accommodation for PSU students, help women incarcerated at Coffee Creek Correctional Institution, and advancing racial equity with the Urban League.
“We are doing everything we can to ensure the success of our students and are engaging with our community to help them emerge from the pandemic stronger than ever,” said Percy. “I am extremely proud of our hard work and progress.
