According to health officials, an employee of the Frisch restaurant who worked in two locations – one in Clark County and another in Champaign County – was confirmed to have hepatitis A.

The Champaign Health District and the Clark County Combined Health District are working with restaurants to vaccinate all employees at 1228 Scioto Street in Urbana and 1830 Bechtle Avenue in Springfield.

According to health officials, the risk of transmission to customers is extremely low due to the implementation of safe food handling procedures.

A spokesman for Frisch's said, "We have fully cooperated with the authorities of the Department of Health and we appreciate the work being done to solve this problem nationwide. The well-being of our guests and members of the team remains our paramount concern. "

The Ohio Department of Health declared an outbreak of hepatitis A nationwide in June of last year. As of March 25, the Clark County Combined Health District had investigated 59 cases of hepatitis A, 42 of which related to the epidemic throughout the state. The Champaign Health District investigated 9 cases of hepatitis A, 6 of which related to the epidemic across the country.

"This case of hepatitis A has just brought to light the fact that the state is still in the throes of an outbreak," said Christina Conover, director of nursing at Clark County's Combined Health District. "Handwashing and vaccination are the most effective strategies for fighting this virus."

The disease, which affects the liver, can be transmitted through the ingestion of feces from an infected individual. The symptoms of hepatitis A include:

  • Tired
  • Low appetite
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Clay stools
  • Jaundice (yellowish color of skin and eyes)

Anyone interested in vaccination should contact their health care provider, local pharmacy or local health district.
