SOMERSET, Ky. (WTVQ) – One lucky college student could win $ 500 in cash – and a host of other prizes – by picking up trash on the roads of Pulaski County during the fall break October 4-8.
The Somerset-Pulaski Economic Development Authority (SPEDA) continues its Triple Bag Challenge in the wake of the 2021 Lake Cumberland cleanup, hosted by the US Army Corps of Engineers on National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 25.
The clean-up event takes place all over Lake Cumberland with the goal of removing trash, tires, appliances and more from its shoreline.
SPEDA President and CEO Chris Girdler said his organization wanted to build on its momentum by hosting the Triple Bag Challenge in early October.
“I can’t think of a better time for us to host this challenge,” Girdler said. “Having it during the fall break gives students plenty of time to find an area of the community to clean up without having academic or extracurricular conflicts. It’s a great time of year to be outside and take in the immense natural beauty of our community. And it continues the tremendous efforts of the Corps of Engineers and the Eastern Kentucky PRIDE to keep Somerset-Pulaski County clean. It’s a win-win for the environment and for our students.
Launched in 2019, the Triple Bag Challenge is a week-long competition for all elementary to high school students living in Somerset and Pulaski County.
The challenge encourages good environmental stewardship by rewarding cleanup efforts.
Students who collect three bags of trash from community roads have the chance to win one of many prizes, including $ 500 in cash, gift cards, gas cards, and park passes. SomerSplash aquatic.
Participation is simple: after registering with SPEDA, students are invited to pick up three bags of trash from any road in the community and post before and after public photos of their cleanup efforts on Facebook and / or Instagram using #spctriplesweep.
“The Triple Bag Challenge is a simple and easy way for students to win prizes for just a little hard work,” said Girdler. “And a little hard work from a number of students goes a long way in keeping our community beautiful. Efforts like these are how we can continue to make Somerset-Pulaski County a better place to live, work and play. We want to make sure that we do everything we can as a community to make good impressions on our visitors, teach our children and youth the importance of taking care of our environment, and promote personal responsibility.
