PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A raccoon from Pittsburgh’s Duquesne Heights neighborhood has tested positive for rabies. It is the first animal to test positive for rabies in Allegheny County in 2021.
The Allegheny County Health Department said earlier this month an animal rescue organization was alerted to the animal’s presence and took care of it.
The raccoon was being treated for scabies by the organization until he started showing symptoms of rabies.
No human exposure has been reported by the animal rescue organization or by residents.
The county health department is reminding residents to watch for unusual behavior in animals and to make sure animals are vaccinated against up to date rabies.
If you see an animal behaving strangely, you are encouraged to call the Pennsylvania Game Commission or the police.
If you are bitten, the county health department says you must clean the wound, get medical treatment, and call the health department to report the incident.
